My Church or God's Kingdom? (by Ray Ortlund) September 24, 2009
"My passion isn't to build up my church. My passion is for God's Kingdom."
Ever heard someone say that? I have. It sounds large-hearted, but it's wrong. It can even be destructive.
Suppose I said, "My passion isn't to build up my marriage. My passion is for Marriage. I want the institution of Marriage to be revered again. I'll work for that. I'll pray for that. I'll sacrifice for that. But don't expect me to hunker down in the humble daily realities of building a great marriage with my wife Jani. I'm aiming at something grander."
If I said that, would you think, "Wow, Ray is so committed"? Or would you wonder if I had lost my mind?
If you care about the Kingdom, be the kind of person who can be counted on in your own church. Join your church, pray for your church, tithe to your church, participate in your church every Sunday with wholehearted passion.
We build great churches the same way we build great marriages -- real commitment that makes a positive difference every day.
Did you send us an email? August 28, 2009
We just discovered that the form you can use to send us an email on the "Contact" page hasn't been working. We hope to get it back up soon.
In the meantime, if you sent us an email in the last 30 days or so, we probably didn't get it. We're sorry! Please give us a call when you have a chance.
Praying the Psalms August 23, 2009
Yes, it's been a long time since I've posted. On the one hand, it's probably a good sign that I've been too busy to fiddle with the website. On the other hand, I do want to post things here that will be encouraging to you.
Since we are going to be spending some time in the Psalms on Sunday mornings, I thought I would post some brief but helpful comments on personally praying the psalms by Tim Keller.
Praying the Psalms
1. The Psalms teach us to pray through imitation and response...Real prayer is always an answer to God's revelation. The Psalms are BOTH prayer and revelations about God, the perfect ideal soil for learning prayer.
2. The Psalms take us deep into our own hearts 1000 times faster than we would ever go if left to ourselves...Religious/moral people tend to want to deny the rawness and reality of their own feelings, especially the darkness of them...The secular world has almost made an idol of emotional self-expression...But the Psalmists neither 'stuff' their feelings nor 'ventilate' them. They pray them–they take them into the presence of God until they change or understand them.
3. Most importantly, the Psalms force us to deal with God as He is, not as we wish he was. 'Left to ourselves, we will pray to some god who speaks what we like hearing, or to the part of God we manage to understand. But what is critical is that we speak to the God who speaks to us, and to everything He speaks to us...the Psalms train us in that conversation." (quote from Eugene Peterson's Answering God)
